Duration: 9 1/2 hours
Extreme Walking or Long Tours
MealExperience the exquisite charm and beauty of one of the world's most visually-stunning locales during this full-day visit to Vatican City, and a tour of Rome.
Depart the pier for the drive to the parking area near Vatican City, then a ten-minute walk to reach the city. Vatican City is the smallest state in the world, with 1,000 citizens all connected to the church. It mints its own coins, prints its own stamps and keeps its own army of Swiss Guards. During your visit, you will see its most important feature, St. Peter's Basilica, which dominates Bernini's gracious square and harmonious colonnade. It took more than 100 years to build in the Renaissance and Baroque styles, and involved a succession of important artists and architects. Resting on over 800 pillars and having 44 altars, St. Peter's is by far the largest church in the world. Sites of interest include Michelangelo's Pietà, the bronze statue of St. Peter and Bernini's Baldachin perched over the high altar.
Next, you will visit the Vatican Museum, home of the 15th-century Sistine Chapel, and paintings by Perugino, Botticelli, Ghirlandao, et al. Michelangelo's works of art dominate the chapel; his Creation of the World, which covers the ceiling, and his Last Judgment fills the wall behind the altar. After lunch at a local restaurant, your sightseeing tour will continue on past Borghese Park, Janiculum Hill, the Castle Sant'Angelo, the Medieval fortress, the Palace of the Popes and the Circus Maximus. You will pass by the Basilica of St. John in Laterano and Santa Maria Maggiore. You will then see the huge monument to Vittorio Emanuele II near Capitol Hill and the Roman Forum, hub of the city in Republican and Imperial times, and location of the Senate House where the fates of nations were once decided.
Additional sites to be seen include the remains of temples, law courts, the House of the Vestal Virgins and the rostrum where Mark Anthony made his impassioned speech over the body of Julius Caesar. You will also view the Trajan Column, with its 2,500 marble figures, and the Arch of Constantine en route to the Coliseum.
Following your visit, you will re-board the coach for the return drive to the pier in Civitavecchia.
Please note: This tour involves approximately 2.5 miles of walking, at times on uneven surfaces. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilize a wheelchair. Parking restrictions in Rome require an approximate ten-minute walk to reach Vatican City, and to rejoin the coach. Guests are required to wear conservative attire covering the shoulders and knees in anticipation of a visit inside St. Peter's Basilica. The order of sights visited may vary. Please be aware that St. Peter's Basilica might close at any given time for security reasons. On Sundays, a visit to the Roman Catacombs will replace the Vatican Museum, which is closed on Sundays. Few sights match those encountered along the Bodrum Peninsula. The towers and battlements of the castle tower over the town, and serve as a reminder of its storied past.
Depart the pier for the walk to the Castle of St. Peter, and a guided tour of the Museum of Underwater Archaeology housed inside. The Castle was built in the 1400s by the Knights of St. John, a group of expatriates that began in the 11th century with a church and hospital in Jerusalem. Although the Knights observed the Catholic religion, they denied care to no one. When they decided to build the Castle of St. Peter, they instructed their builders to remove marble, stone and other usable material from the tomb of King Mausolos, or Halicarnasus Mausoleum, for use in the castle's construction.
Upon arrival at the castle, you will pass through its seven gates embellished with coats of arms and inscriptions. During your walking tour, you will visit the Museum of Underwater Archaeology.
