North African cruise:
the lure of Libyan lands

Who now goes to El Alamein? There never was much there, except for a brief but memorable time during the Second World War when the British and Allied forces finally dug in between coast and desert to confront, and finally rout, the German and Italian armies. It was one of the turning points of the war and certainly to those, like me, who were alive at that time...

Hello

Family travel is in – and increasing in popularity – and you’ve decided it’s time to really re-connect with loved ones. Smiley-face icons and lol abbreviations are jeopardizing meaningful, face-to-face interaction. You’ve come to realize that texting your teenager when he’s upstairs in his room and you’re in the kitchen is getting a little ridiculous,. So you’ve decided a cruise is the answer to help re-unite with parents, the in-law’s and the kids.

Good idea! So you check out mainstream cruises that offer a plethora of pursuits on board. The teens can climb rock walls or body surf in wave pools. Your parents and in-laws could be checking out the golf simulator and your better half could be in the fitness center while you’re luxuriating in the spa. Nothing wrong with this picture – or is there?

Big box cruising is geared for a multitude of amenities; the more ships they bring on line, the greater the activities for every taste, age, or pursuit. It’s a recreation bonanza on water. Nothing wrong with that, but what happened to your desire to re-connect and re-unite with one another? You’re all off doing your own thing. In fact, it’s no different to being at home, is it?

Why not look into the smaller vessels where there isn’t an onboard movie theater with surround sound or a Vegas-style show in sight. No ice skating, mini golf, or karaoke machine anywhere to be found. Look at vessels like the S/V Diamant, a 12-passenger brigantine schooner that sails into secret coves where you can make seldom-visited islands in the Grenadines all your own.

Instead of everyone heading off to do their own thing, here all of you can enjoy marine creatures, snorkeling, nature and wildlife, and gazing at birdlife together, as a family, with no one else to get in the way of your desire to re-connect.
