What are Mega Yachts?
Luxury or mega yachts began to appear in the early twentieth century when wealthy individuals constructed large private yachts for personal pleasure. These very expensive, privately owned yachts are professionally crewed and may be either a sailing or motor yacht.
These beautiful yachts soon became the center of many prominent social gatherings. The elite gathered to witness racers, such as the S/Y Endeavour and Sir Thomas Lipton’s S/Y Shamrock, mesmerize the crowds during the Americas Cup. The New York Yacht Club hosted many early luxury sailing yacht events at Newport, Rhode Island, during the Gilded Age.
More recently, over the last decade or two, there has been an increase in the number and popularity of large private luxury yachts. Luxury yachts are particularly bountiful in the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas, lining the coastlines of many beautiful destinations. Looking for more adventure on the off the beaten paths of the world?
Luxury yachts are increasingly cruising in more remote areas of the world, able to go where few have ventured to before.
Typical Mega Yacht Layout
The accommodation on this type of yacht is typically as follows:
- The Lower deck typically consists of an exterior swimming platform at the stern. A handful of intimate guest cabins with en-suite bath or shower rooms line the aft of the ship. The engine room and crew quarters complete the remaining space.
- The Main deck features a sheltered exterior deck leading into the salon perfect for those lazy afternoons. Fine dining and superior service await you in the dining room while the staff prepares your favorite dish in the galley. The luxurious owner's suite, that usually includes either a study or a second twin stateroom, is the perfect place for you to relax as your ship sails the world.
- The Upper deck sets the stage for a romantic dinner under the stars. Melt your cares away in the sky lounge with a drink from the full service bar. Indulge in too much delicious food? An hour at the gym will do the trick. The captain takes a break in his cabin when he is not on the bridge charting out your next adventure.
- Soak in the sun’s rays up on the Sun deck, the roof of the upper deck. Too cool for sunbathing? Then a dip in the Jacuzzi will warm your soul as the wonders of the world pass you by.
